As sustainability and responsible use of natural resources have a high significance at Peter Greven, sourcing of sustainable raw materials – especially when it comes to palm oil – is important.
Therefore, the Peter Greven Group became an official member of RSPO in 2010.
The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), which was founded in 2004, is a non-profit association. It unites stakeholders from seven sectors of the palm oil industry in order to develop and to introduce global standards for sustainable palm oil. Therefore, different certification systems for companies from the palm oil supply chain were developed.
Right after becoming a member of RSPO, no certified raw material was available in the market. As this changed and RSPO Mass Balance (MB) fatty acids became available on the market, our site in Venlo (Netherlands) started all the internal preparations and processes in order to conclude the RSPO certification in accordance with SCCS (Supply Chain Certification System) promptly. In September 2013 Peter Greven Nederland became the first metallic soap producer to receive the RSPO SCCS certificate which officially confirms the production and distribution of vegetable based stearates and dispersions containing RSPO MB certified fatty acid.
After our RSPO MB products were established on the market, we got another opportunity in 2016: As raw material of the next higher certification level, RSPO Segregated (SG), became available, we extended our certification and supplemented our product portfolio by RSPO SG certified products.
So far, we have advanced in a way that our headquarters in Bad Münstereifel (Germany) is RSPO certified since 2015 and our site in Penang (Malaysia) since 2017. Both sites are certified according to the Mass Balance (MB) model.
Forum Nachhaltiges Palmöl (Forum for Sustainable Palm Oil, abbreviation: FONAP) is an association which was founded in 2013. Similar to RSPO it unites several stakeholders including private companies, non-governmental organisations and associations as well as the Federal Ministry for nutrition and agriculture. In the course of FONAP’s work two objectives are pursued: On the one hand, the usage of sustainably grown palm oil shall be increased by the self-commitment of the member companies. On the other hand, the certification systems for sustainable palm oil (RSB, RSPO, ISCC and RAINFORREST ALLIANCE Certification), which are officially accepted by FONAP, shall be continuously developed and enhanced.
Also the producers of derivatives, like Peter Greven, are an important part of the palm oil supply chain. Until recently, those companies were not able to become a member of FONAP as they could only fulfil parts of the necessary self-commitment.
To close this gap within the supply chain and therefore to support the FONAP members to accomplish their goals a new category called “Supporter” was introduced.
We took this chance immediately and our Life Science site Peter Greven Nederland in Venlo became an official Supporter of FONAP in November 2017. Therefore, we hope to further increase our influence on the development and enhancement of standards for sustainably grown palm oil.
