FONAP - Contribution to a Responsible Palm Oil Supply Chain
Since 2017, we have been an official member of the Forum for Sustainable Palm Oil (FONAP), actively supporting the transformation towards sustainable and responsible palm oil use. The forum was founded in 2013, registered as an official association in 2015, and brings together companies, civil society organizations, associations, and political actors to jointly advance binding sustainability standards in the palm oil sector. At the general meeting in April this year in Berlin, where we were also present, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the association.
The goal of FONAP is to increase the share of certified sustainable palm oil in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland while also promoting requirements that go beyond certification—particularly concerning environmental and social standards as well as transparency in the supply chain.
Our membership in FONAP complements our commitment in the palm oil sector. It provides us with the opportunity to collaborate in working groups and dialogue formats with other stakeholders, share best practices, and critically discuss current developments.
We place great importance on actively participating in FONAP’s smallholder projects. Smallholder farmers play a central role in global palm oil cultivation but often face significant challenges—such as access to markets, training in sustainable farming methods, and compliance with international standards. By engaging in smallholder projects, we are actively involved in the producing countries on the ground. These projects not only strengthen the economic situation of producers but also promote social structures and environmental awareness in communities. For us, this is an important step to credibly and sustainably implement sustainability along the entire value chain—from cultivation to the finished product.
We are convinced that the transition to more sustainable palm oil can only succeed through dialogue and shared responsibility. Collaboration in FONAP is a key component of our sustainability approach in the raw materials sector.
