Since October 2020, the trainees of the engineering department have participated in the Energy Scout Program 2020/2021 of the Aachen Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This is an additional qualification within the scope of the "Mittelstandinitiative Energiewende und Klimaschutz" (SME initiative for energy transition and climate protection), with the aim of sensitizing junior staff to energy-saving potentials. The three trainees complete their apprenticeships with us as industrial mechanics and electronics technicians for automation technology.
As part of the Energy Scout Project, our trainees investigated the energy saving potentials around the rotary valves used in Peter Greven's production. After the theoretical elaboration of possible optimization approaches and an overall survey of all rotary valves in the production plant, the expected savings were calculated.
The work of the energy scouts led to the surprising recognition that the savings that can be determined under operating conditions are significantly lower than the expected values calculated using manufacturer specifications. Nevertheless, with regard to the pure compressed air requirement of all rotary valves, approximately 34 % compressed air can be saved. If the savings are related to the total compressed air requirement of the production site, the savings potential is around 1 %.
Even if the project result in terms of energy and cost savings does not reach the values that were assumed in advance, savings can still be achieved by means of inexpensive measures that have been included in our ISO 50001 energy program for 2021.
At the final event of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in April, our trainees were able to convince the jury of experts with their project and won the first place together with Semcoglas GmbH.
We are pleased that our trainees took the opportunity of this project to identify and implement measures to save energy and thus contribute to the sustainability of our production site.
